Some People Will Never Get It

Some people will never get it, no matter how many times you try to explain it to them.  They are just incapable of understanding your disorder.  I don’t know what to do about that, other than just try to accept it the best you can.  I need to distract myself from angry feelings when that happens, which is an awful lot.  It feels like they just don’t care, or else they would make more of an effort to remember that I am not like them.  My brain does not work like theirs does.  My favourite ways to distract myself are:  going for a walk and blasting music on the headphones while playing a game on the computer or looking stuff up to keep my mind busy.

Here is an excellent video clip.

I wish people could try to understand how hard it is for those of us with BPD, and cut us some slack!

What are your experiences with this?  How do you feel when it happens?  How do you cope?  Do you have any suggestions?  Please let us know in the Comments section below.  I’d love to hear from you!  (Please?  I’m lonely!)   😦          😆

  1. BPD is tough. Youtube videos are good for explaining, why? it shows that what you feel/experience is not unique to you. This is what I try to show, that Many suffer and struggle at times, tis not just someone here or there. Maybe if they see, someone else say the same things that you say… then the tiny light bulb will go on or flicker a tiny bit.. and some compassion may grow, I am sure understanding takes more time, maybe they will never understand, but to try is grand.

  2. It certainly is! For people around me, I can explain things until I’m blue in the face, but if someone else says the exact same thing, they’ll listen to them. Which gets me extremely angry! Why will they listen to everyone else but me? Am I stupid? Do I have no idea what I’m talking about? (Even though I live with it every single day?!) Am I not worth listening to, but others are?

  3. it’s all about the stigma. My best bet is to stick with those who have mental illness and understand, or those who don’t have it but still have compassion for those of us who do. All others I don’t even bother to explain it to. They just don’t get it, and that is ok.

It is like trying to explain to someone all of the joys and pains of raising kids to someone who has none. Until they live with those little buggers 24/7 for 18 years or more, they will never understand how hard it is to be a parent. They may think they do, but they don’t.

And it is not worth my peace of mind to be the one to “make” them get it, whether it be parenthood or mental illness. It never works anyway, unless they are ready to or want to understand.

I don’t understand what it is like to have had cancer, but I can still have compassion for those who have had it. But, I will never truly understand it unless I have to experience it. And I hope I never have to. Sometimes I’ll say that to people who tell me they don’t understand why I act the way I do. I’ll say, “I know…and I hope you never have to.”

Bottom line is, once I got ok with myself and wasn’t stigmatizing myself, so to speak, then the stigmatism from others didn’t really bother me as much. ((hugs))
