Event on: “Borderline Personality Disorder: Theory, Treatment and Special Considerations” Presented by Nancy Joseph, Ph.D. About the Speaker: Dr. Nancy Joseph is a licensed psychologist and received her doctoral degree in psychology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She has trained at the Boston University Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders, the Boston Veterans’ Affairs Hospital, and McLean Hospital. She currently serves as the site training director at Sovereign Health of San Clemente. As part of her duties, she supervises psychology students in the doctoral and postdoctoral internship program. Dr. Joseph specializes in the delivery of empirically supported therapeutic interventions including CBT, DBT, and motivational interviewing. Another important component of her direct care is providing support and psychoeducation to families as they help loved ones navigate their process of recovery. As a clinician, she values providing empirically supported and client driven care to adult and youth populations presenting with complex psychopathology in real world treatment settings. As part of her commitment to the scientist-practitioner model, she has also developed a line of scholarly inquiry that aligns with her clinical interests in implementation science. Course Abstract: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is an often-misunderstood diagnosis that may carry a negative stigma in popular culture and even professional health settings. The purpose of this presentation will be to provide an overview of BPD symptoms as well as theoretical conceptualizations of the disorder. In addition, we will review the treatment targets and strategies utilized in dialectical behavior therapy to address skills deficits associated with BPD. Lastly, we will discuss special considerations for family members and professionals working with clients who present with BPD traits. Course Objectives: At the conclusion of the workshop, the attendee will be able to: • List BPD symptoms.• Identify the theoretical conceptualizations of the disorder.• Recite with the treatment targets and strategies utilized in dialectical behavior therapy to address skills deficits associated with BPD.
