Same, but Different

Not everyone with Borderline Personality Disorder is alike.  There are 256 different ways to have BPD.  But I think that many of the different ways that BPD manifests itself comes from the same places.  For example, not everyone with BPD has anger issues.  But some people with BPD turn their anger inwards into depression – “quiet borderlines”.  They seem to be totally different but their symptoms come from the same thing – anger, either shown outwardly or turned inwards into depression.

I’ve heard some people have said “You can’t be Borderline, you don’t rage like Borderlines do.”  That may be because their anger is turned inwards into depression.  These people may be misdiagnosed or totally missed for years or even decades.  For about two decades, I suffered in silence.  I didn’t know what was wrong with me.  I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety.  It wasn’t until I finally received my diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder that I started getting the right treatment and started getting better.  I did Dialectical Behaviour Therapy for a year.  I have been in recovery since 2006.  I didn’t even find out about “quiet borderlines” until years after leaving DBT, in 2013, through my own research.

What do you think?  Do you think that many of the symptoms of BPD that seem unrelated actually come from the same place?  Are they just manifested differently?  Have you ever heard of “Quiet Borderlines”?  Would you like to share your experience?  If so, please leave a comment below.  I’d love to hear from you!

Till next time,

— Joyce.

  1. I just recently heard about “quiet borderlines”. I think we all experience the symptoms differently, but the core symptoms remain the same.
