Noticing My Black-and-White Thinking

For quite a while now, I’ve been taking notice of my black-and-white thinking patterns.  Especially when it comes to housework.  I get so overwhelmed, and then I tell myself I don’t have to do it all right now.  I can do it in stages – a little bit at a time.  It’ll still get done.  This helps a lot.  Right now, I’m chipping away at our laundry.  We were without a dryer for the first time in twenty years and just recently got a used one.  The laundry had piled up while I was going to the laundromat.  I’m getting it caught up slowly but surely.  This is just one area of my life where I’ve noticed my black-and-white thinking.  There are many other times that I’ve noticed myself doing all-or-nothing thinking.  But once I notice it, I can do something about it.

Have you noticed yourself doing black-and-white or all-or-nothing thinking?  Have you made any progress in that area?  What have you done to make progress?  Please share in the Comments below.  Till next time,

— Joyce.

  1. Oh yes, I struggle with black and white thinking. I’m still learning how to balance.

  2. I was recently diagnosed with BDP and have not started counseling yet. I’m overwhelmed with the diagnosis let alone everything else in my life. My anxiety has been in weekend going from best to worst case scenario. I’m happy that I have a name to go with what I’ve been dealing with (and putting my family thru) but I’m scared to deat.

  3. The good thing is that now you have a diagnosis. DBT is one of the best treatments for BPD. Are you starting DBT? Whatever counseling you do, I hope it works well for you. If you are doing DBT, it can be difficult at times, but it is so worth it. It is totally life-changing, for the better. Good luck.

  4. I am going through that with house work right now. I have to make a list and divide the chores up day by day or else I get too overwhelmed and even then I am tempted to either do it all in one day or do nothing at all. It is so hard to balance it out when you have the mind of BPD.

    • It can be very hard to balance it out, but I’m getting better at noticing it and doing something about it. I hope your list idea helps. I try making lists. It does help me a bit.
